I hope Jared Smith doesn't mind my taking this action, but if you don't follow him on Twitter, you would have missed his most recent message:

"Having a large portion of my toe removed. Possible Melanoma. Please check for and have suspicious spots examined. Now. Please."

I've seen Jared mention his faith in his tweets, so I know he's very religious. If you are, too, I know that your prayers will mean a great deal to him and his family right now. If you're not, I'm sure your caring thoughts will mean a lot to them as well.

But most of all, do take his message seriously. If you don't know exactly what to look for to detect possible melanomas, please learn. If you do know, please refresh your memory. The Mayo Clinic has good information online: http://tinyurl.com/32gh3af (I'm sure there are other good sources, too.)

If you can't see well enough to recognize melanomas on yourself, please have someone close to you or a medical professional help you out by checking periodically.

And don't overlook areas that rarely if ever see the sun. As Jared's case shows, melanomas can develop there, too.

The steps to prevent, detect, and, with early detection, treat melanoma are simple. The consequences of waiting too long are harsh. So don't let melanoma sneak up on you or those in your care.

Jared, I'm sure everyone on this list is pulling for you. Get well and stay well, my friend.

Thanks kindly for your thoughts and words. I head off to the doctor
shortly, a bit unsure of what will transpire.

It's quite interesting how this all transpired. My sister is a nurse
and got a job working for a dermatologist that specializes in skin
cancer. A few weeks into her work, she noticed an odd-colored spot
between her toes. She immediately asked her boss to check it and they
found it to be melanoma. Gratefully she was in this position otherwise
she would likely have not noticed or done anything if she did. The
doctor indicated that she would have likely been dead within the year.
She had a very large portion of two toes and the surrounding area
removed and they were, as near as we are able to tell, able to get all
of the cancer. She will be recovering and hobbling for several more
months.

At her advisement, I checked myself thoroughly and found a small spot
at almost the exact same spot on the same toe as my sister. Call it
coincidence, intervention, or whatever, I'm just grateful that my
sister is OK and that her situation caused me to investigate something
I'd never have given a second thought to otherwise.

Considering the genetic disposition for melanoma, the doctor removed
the spot a few weeks ago, but the biopsy tests came back mixed. So,
off I go today to either get a larger sample removed or to just have
them go to town on it and hopefully remove any potential melanoma.
Considering the significance and speed at which melanoma kills, I
think we will opt for a more aggressive treatment.

The moral is to check yourself often and have any suspicious moles,
spots, etc., especially in odd places like between your toes, checked
by a doctor.

Thank you for your thoughts and prayers. I hope you'll forgive this
important divergence in topic. Now back to our regularly scheduled
programming.

Oh dear, Jared, my prayers are with you. My faith has gotten me
througha lot too. And I am due for a docter's appointment. This is
reminding me to make it. My doctor checks my skin since I can't see it
anymore.

Thanks for letting us know, and Jared, do keep us posted when you can.

The doctor opted to do more tests to absolutely verify malignancy
before being more aggressive. He took a sample about the size and
thickness of a shirt button from the inside of my toe. So, it's not
too bad, though the local anesthetic has yet to wear off. Now 10 long
days for biopsy results.

All this talk of me and me toe makes me uncomfortable. Assume no news
is good news. :-)

Randi brought up an excellent point about the need for many here who
can't see their own skin to have it checked by others.

Jared, the waiting is horrible. It's like being stuck in limbo. I had
some bipsies done about a year ago. Or maybe a little longer. They
came back neither malignant nor benign, showed changes, they said. So
I really do need to get in and checked again. I will have her check my
toes. :)

Its an adventure, said Fred.
