Subject: accessible youtube player that has a "show captions" option
No previous message | Next message →
hey all,
I am working on a site which will be hosting a bunch of youtube movies.
They will be captioned and transcribed.
The problem is that the youtube player is not keyboard accessible and I
haven't been able to find one that lets me access the "cc" link to show
the captions.
If I enter this movie
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QRS8MkLhQmM&cc=1
into the easy youtube player
http://icant.co.uk/easy-youtube/
I can't get at the captions. If I embed the youtube player I can use my
mouse to click on the captions but I can't tab to the player.
Is there a keyboard accessible player out there that can be embedded in
a page that has access to captions?
thanks!

Sandy,
The last I heard, the problem is that YouTube does not offer access to closed captioning features through its API. So, if you build an improved interface for keyboard operation, you lose the captions.
Very frustrating!

I haven't tested and am just shooting out an idea.
Would it be possible to embed the YouTube player and then to add some links via Javascript to control the player (either above or below the player)? This would result in duplication of controls, but would also mean that you have keyboard accessible controls and access to captions.

You should be able to set the captions to play by default, but as you
suggest, you can not turn them on or off from the API provided.
Check out the JWPlayer. It's pretty good and will play YouTube videos.

The most accessible one I have found is the JWPlayer Controller. (a dojo
wrapper around the JWPlayer)
http://wac.osu.edu/examples/jwpc/
But both these are restricted by the API into YouTube and can not control
the CC button.

ah now, that might be the best way out of this pickle ... it's a bit
unsubtle, but sometimes hitting it with a hammer is the way to go.
I'll talk to the client.

Sandy, We will be coming out with a new version of the jwplayer controller
in the coming weeks. We will be adding some more accessibility features
including the ability to easily implement youtube videos.

Vincent, this sounds really promising.
Will users be able to tab to controls and turn captioning on and off?
thanks!

And there are bunches of links on the Web about this topic:

Everett, it sounds like a great idea, maybe even possible if I can get
some help ...
thanks!

in this context, is it appropriate for the captions to show to
all viewers? Because you can force captions to be on any YouTube
video, either via internal settings or via URL:
