List,

I'm giving a presentation on Accessibility to a group of computer science
majors. I'm interested in any topics that this list would recommend be
covered.

I plan on discussing Web accessibility, and designing accessible software. Of
course, I will use the Section 508 and W3C materials as a beginning point.
I'm open to additional suggestions of what computer science majors should know
about accessibility.

thanks
Mark Rew

The Recent release of an Updated piece at W3/WAI is a good one to
present. Or even read and outline some points. It reflects both the
Market Share aspects and the Technical Effectiveness benefits to
businesses, etc... when pages are coded or developed to accessibility
and guidelines - which often run hand in hand.

In these areas it covers Semantic Web, Internationalization aspects,
readiness for delivery to future devices, portability to a variety of
devices, etc... Good read and might make a nice presentation to outline
or summarize these benefits and chart the effectiveness for each area.
Much of this can be applied to all Internet and Intranet web sites.

the piece is located at:
Auxiliary Benefits of Accessible Web Design [updated March 24, 2002]

I think if it one lecture I would talk about alternative access to the
web. I think it is much more interesting for them to see how the web is
different for some people. This I think makes the guidelines seem more
real when they are discussed.

I have some reference materials, you are welcome to use them if you would like:

Check out the Trace Center's resources on Designing More Usable Computers
and Software -- http://trace.wisc.edu/world/computer_access/ -- and also
their remarks and links for general principles of universal design --
http://trace.wisc.edu/world/gen_ud.html

The UK Royal National Institute of the Blind also has some good information
for software developers at http://www.rnib.org.uk/technology/software.htm

The one thing I'd want them to know is that they should consider and build
in accessibility from the beginning, rather than trying to make things
accessible after they're nearly done.
