Hello,
Does anyone know whether it's possible to add ALT tags to text elements on a web page? I'm sure I heard of a way to do this, but can no longer remember and all searches are fruitless.
Regards,
martino

In other words -- use the "title" tag to add additional, human-readable
information to your links.

And if you want to add a title to plain text, you can use:
<span title="this is the title">This text has a title.</span>

Kynn, that is a neat tip. And screen readers do read the title? Does it
also show up when tabbing?

I also wondered if screen readers read the title so I tried a little
experiment. I added title tags that were different from the content and then
read the page with Jaws. It was inconsistent. For some links it read the
title tag but did not for others. They are helpful, but I would not want to
depend on them.

Thanks Cheryl, that's good to know.
Does anyone know of a comparison of screen readers, showing what they do
support and how? That would be a handy resource.

I think this is settable in Jaws. You can choose whether to read the title
or the content of the link or the longest of the two. (Look at the
Configuration Manager, then HTML Options.)
