We launched a new design for our official state blogs today. See the Mass.Gov blog http://blog.mass.gov/ for instance.

Part of the new design was to include links back to the official website at the top of each page, to tie it in better with the main site. Our concern is that this may be confusing because screen readers will read it first, before the title of the blog, and they're not relevant to the blog itself.

Should we hide them (aria-hidden="true") and then repeat them as a visually hidden side module? Or add visually hidden text that is the blog title to the skip link ("Skip to main content [of the Mass.Gov Blog]")? Any other suggestions?

Or are we worrying too much?

If this isn't a concern for sighted users, I wouldn't think it would
be an issue for screen reader users. I think the context and content
of the links sufficiently off-sets them.

Probably. User testing might answer this more definitively, but I
don't think I'd do anything special to fix a problem that probably
doesn't exist... or if it does exist, it probably exists for everyone,
so there's no need for a special screen reader-only fix.

This seems like a usability question pertinent to any user, not an accessibility issue for screen readers.

I agree with Jared. If there is some big worry, you could dump the links
elsewhere on the page, like before /body, and use CSS to position. While it
may confuse keyboard users, it gets around the context part.

I would think that in-context, those links along the top that aren't
related to the blog itself might be a bit confusing for all users. As
Jared mentioned, their placement probably alleviates this a little,
but I think a greater visual distinction would work better.

Also, the off-screen span in use could be improved. Instead of a span,
use a heading.

Before
<span class="screen-reader-text">Navigation to get to Mass.gov:</span>

After:
<h2 class="screen-reader-text">Navigation to Mass.gov Portal:</h2>
