Can I put other regions inside the main content ( role="main"). For eg: I
have a main post and set of links related to that post, I want to put these
links inside the main content. Will it cause any accessibility issues?

You can use but as the links are an additional part of the main article, use of <aside> element would be good.

Hi List ,

Using JAWS 15 in trial mode I noticed something which was unanticipated.
Till JAWS 13 pressing Insert + ; was used to skip to different
Landmarks, which according to me was a very good feature , but sadly
not working in JAWS 15.
After which tried googling, and referring the following page for
keyboard shortcut.
http://webaim.org/articles/jaws/

Pressing Insert + R as mentioned in webaim , only reads out , "You
must turn on either JAWS or Invisible cursor before you can set
restriction ".
Only what comes closer is pressing Q for going to main region and
pressing Control + Insert + R for listing out ARIA Landmarks. Which
according to me is a "reduced functionality and inconvenient". Am I
missing out something ?
Is it something to do with Html 5 ? Why was this simple
functionality change in the later versions ?

By what I see their are atleast 1000 sites referring to "JaWS Keyboard
shortcuts " which have become standard over a period of time , Every
time a version of JAWS comes up, with a relatively a new set of
shortcuts, does it not creates confusion for a general JAWS user
whose search results may not directly go to freedom scientific sites ,
but to one of those sites which have not been updated for years ?

Adding to confusion are thousands of keyboard shortcuts which user
has to remember for accomplishing a task.
Looking at a bigger picture , Does this means that every time the
user learns a new version of JAWS , he has to again do R & D for new
shortcuts by going to freedom scientific website which are unclear
many times ? In my opinion this will discourage other online web
content authors to write about JAWS. This in my opinion certainly
discourages accessibility testers to suggest developers to add ARIA
page role definitions.

Hi,
Have you tried pressing just the letter "r"? I discovered this when
seeking radio buttons in a form. "R" now navigates between regions. I
haven't found a replacement shortcut for radio buttons.

The "insert" key is not required. To move between landmarks on web pages in
Jaws -14, only the ";" (semi-colon) key is required.

"Pressing Insert + R as mentioned in webaim , only reads out , "You must
turn on either JAWS or Invisible cursor before you can set restriction ".

As before, the "insert" key is not required. Use "r" to move between
landmarks in Jaws15+.

" Is it something to do with Html 5 ? Why was this simple
functionality change in the later versions ?"

No, it's nothing to do with HTML5. The Jaws quick nav keys were changed to
make them more user friendly. Semi-colon is not an intuitive key to
remember, whereas "r" is much easier because it moves focus from one
landmark region to another.

"Adding to confusion are thousands of keyboard shortcuts which user has to
remember for accomplishing a task."

There are probably only a couple of hundred commands for any particular
screen reader, Jaws is no exception. Most screen reader users will only
utilise a handful of those though.

"Looking at a bigger picture , Does this means that every time the user
learns a new version of JAWS , he has to again do R & D for new shortcuts by
going to freedom scientific website which are unclear many times ?"

It isn't unreasonable for new versions (of any software) to introduce new
features and occaissional changes. That said, Jaws quick nav keys have
remained fairly constant since they were introduced in Jaws 4.5 in 2002. New
quick nav keys have been added over the years, including the landmark
shortcut in Jaws 12 in 2010, but to the best of my knowledge the change to
the landmark shortcut is an exception rather than the norm.

In Jaws15+ the shortcut for radio buttons is "a".

Hi

I believe that ctrl-insert-r in Jaws 15 still works to see all the
ARIA regions on the page. I am on vacation with an old laptop with me,
so I only have a 14 on it and cannot verify this.
It is true that insert-r has to do with virtual cursor operations but
ctrl-insert-r should enable user to navigate the landmarks structure,
if present.
There has been quite a bit of confusion surrounding the switch from ;
to r for this, but I believe that FS wanted to make the navigation
more intuitive for users by using "r" for "regions", though it is
purely guesswork on my part.
; is now used for mouseover actions while radiobuttons cannot be
naviged to by using the "a" key as Leonie pointed out.
Those of you who have websites with screen reader shortcuts, please
revise if possible.
I know it is a pain in the unmentionables to have to add another
complication to such tables, but I hope that the switch does help to
promote landmarks as powerful navigational aids on well-designed
websites and encourage users and web designers alike to take advantage
of them.

Hello.

Because the discussion is about aria regions, I have a quick question. In
JAWS 15, the command I used to use to navigate blockquote regions letter Q
has now been changed. It is now used to go immediately to the main region.
Do you know if there's a new shortcut key for blockquotes?
