It was very helpful to learn from the WebAIM site about how to change the
Dreamweaver config file to include the DOC type tag. I notice, though, that
the config file changes apply only when I open a new file from File, New in
Dreamweaver. When I convert an MS Word document to HTML (File, Export to
Compact HTML, then Start, Programs, Microsoft Office Tools, Microsoft Office
HTML Filter 2.0) , then open the HTML file in Dreamweaver, the changes I've
made to the Dreamweaver config file haven't been applied.

You cannot force Dreamweaver to always insert a doctype no matter what.
If you create a file in another program and then open it in HTML,
Dreamweaver preserves the code as it is. Most of the time, this is
advantageous. No one wants software to mess with their work. You want to
have control over it. You can either copy and paste the doctype from
another document, or you can use one of the free Dreamweaver extensions
to insert a doctype (you still have to tell it to insert the doctype, it
won't do it automatically, but you don't have to copy and paste or
memorize the doctype). Dreamweaver extensions are available through
Macromedia's web site. Go to
http://dynamic.macromedia.com/bin/MM/exchange/main.jsp?product=dreamweav
er then perform a search for "doctype". There are currently four
different utilities that can do this.

Thanks very much.
