Subject: You Tube video

EEOC created a You Tube video that has closed captions and no sound. This is great for the Deaf but not so great for our friends who are blind. The screen reader did not pick up on anything.

Is there a way to somehow get the captions to be picked up by screen readers? I'm attaching the link for you to see. I know this will not work for some of you... if you can, ask someone to describe the video?

Suggestions?

We need to make it accessible obviously.

Thanks!

The video needs an audio described version and likely a text
transcript. YouTube does not allow audio description tracks on a
single video so you'll need to create a separate linked video. Also
you can paste the text transcript into the video description for all
to read.

I would vote for one video, not two. One narrator can read the title cards
and quotes from others, such as Maya Angelou. If the EEOC has the phone
numbers of the people in the portraits, they could record audio of the
people holding the signs. They could also perhaps lower the volume of the
music a tad if it competed too much with the vocals.

YouDescribe is another option. http://youdescribe.org/search.php

The video mentioned in the original post is now marked as "This video
is private", but I was very intrigued by http://youdescribe.org/ -
seems like a great idea in theory, but there's no kind of rating or
categorisation, and I've just spent 15 minutes wading through what is
90% unlistenable crap to be honest! However, the remaining 10% is
really good almost broadcast-quality AD - if there was quality control
and categorisation and some kind of rating system, it would be a
fantastic project. Without that, I fear it might end up like Librivox,
which has become little croutons of quality reading floating around in
a soup made largely of 12 year olds with $2 headsets and limited
reading ability.
