Hi Everyone,

I have a lot of Word and PDF documents that I want to make into HTML files,
in as automated a way as possible (I am okay doing it one by one though if
needed). However, I want the HTML to be clean and not full of code bits
that shouldn't be there.

I know Word has the Save As HTML but the code is gross and bloated.

Anyone using a system that produces HTML with good clean code?

Cheers

Lisa

I feel your pain Lisa. I hate the code Word generates. I wish it was clean and straight to the point.

So far, I haven't found a program, but I'd join my voice to Lisa's.

Hi Lisa,
I don't have personal experience with what you just said, but I am about to give a tool I have here a try to see what happens. Can you give me an idea how complex one of your documents is, so I can try to produce a similar test here? If

Thanks.

"Save as HTML" is the biggest disservice ever done to web developers everywhere. Just sayin.

Hi Jim,

It can be any type of document, simple or complex.

Thanks!

Jim,

She is referring to the Microsoft styling that is embedded in HTML when Word converts the file. Microsoft adds its own markup that is based on XML garbage.

After you save the file, if you open it in notepad, you will see what I am talking about. It is pretty nasty. Modifying it is a royal pain. You are best redoing your own stylesheet.

This one has worked for us better than anything else so far:
https://html-cleaner.com/

As far as batch processing, we have not been able to locate any
consistently effective tools yet.

Hi Stacey,

Thanks! Now if I could find something similar as a program I can download,
then that would be perfect. This is good for most of my documents, but I
have a few documents that are restricted and shouldn't be done this way (I
know the info isn't stored but I need to be very conservative with a couple
of these!).

We can definitely start with this one for now.

Cheers

Lisa

You're welcome!

I did notice this on their FAQ page <https://htmlg.com/help/>:

Q: Is there an offline version?
A: There's no offline version but the program needs internet connection
only when you load the page. After that you can disconnect because
everything is executed on the client side.

So - not as convenient since you'd have to go on and off of the internet
with each doc... but likely faster than a manual clean-up job. I also wish
this were available as an offline, local application.

Hi Stacey,

Yes, I saw that too so I would believe them in terms of non storage. I have
a couple of documents that need an offline, non website solution but for
the rest this would work great!

I am still exploring download programs, will let you know if I come across
anything good!

Cheers

Q: Is there an offline version?
A: There's no offline version but the program needs internet connection only when you load the page. After that you can disconnect because everything is executed on the client side.

So - not as convenient since you'd have to go on and off of the internet with each doc... but likely faster than a manual clean-up job. I also wish this were available as an offline, local application.

You're welcome!

I did notice this on their FAQ page <https://htmlg.com/help/>:

Q: Is there an offline version?
A: There's no offline version but the program needs internet connection only when you load the page. After that you can disconnect because everything is executed on the client side.

So - not as convenient since you'd have to go on and off of the internet with each doc... but likely faster than a manual clean-up job. I also wish this were available as an offline, local application.
