Subject: PDF Association - New version of Tagged PDF Best Practice Guide: Styles released this week!

Earlier this week, apparently, the PDF Association quietly released a
new (and in my opinion, dramatically updated!) version of their Tagged
PDF Best Practice Guide: Styles document:

Public note to Duff Johnson: Hopefully by sharing this on the WebAIM
list, I'm not stealing too much of your thunder about the new release.
Sorry. But it's been up for *days*, and I just found out about it now!

A quick scan tells me that this is a super useful document that will be
a critical resource in my PDF reference material. In fact, I need to
share this immediately with some folks I work with who will soon be
compiling an internal set of best practices for tagging PDFs. Good news
can't wait!

Hi Philip,

Heh… I've been maxed out, and so barely had time to post it, much less promote it! :-/

First, and most importantly, I want to give full credit to the many members of the PDF Association's PDF/UA Technical Working Group who engaged in dozens of meetings over several years to develop this content. They volunteer their time to help extend PDF's promise of interoperability beyond the rendered page; we are grateful for their efforts.

Documents like this are never finished. There are many areas that could stand improvement, and feedback is welcome! As stated on the download page, those wishing to comment may email their concerns to = EMAIL ADDRESS REMOVED = <mailto: = EMAIL ADDRESS REMOVED = >… and of course, software developers and other technical experts are invited to join the PDF Association to help us continue this work.

The labor continues; the PDF/UA TWG is now working on a complementary document providing guidance on best practice in tagging (as opposed to syntax). Other initiatives are also underway, including development of a set of canonical examples of correctly-tagged PDF.

Well then, a warm and heartfelt thanks to the Technical Working Group
and others who helped put this together.

And an additional apology for misnaming it by using "Styles" instead of
"Syntax" in the subtitle - too much CSS in my head these days. The
proper name should be:
Tagged PDF Best Practice Guide: Syntax

I look forward to the best practice Tagging guidance in the future.

Keep in mind that this particular guide from the PDF Association is NOT
intended for content creators and remediators; it's specifically written for
those who develop software that create accessible PDFs.

In Sec. 2 of the guide, it states:
"Although this document may be useful to technically-inclined authors, it is
not intended as a guide for document authors seeking information on how to
tag PDF files. It does not address WCAG 2.1 or Section 508, but it can be
used to inform activities intended to achieve conformance with such
requirements."

As you read through it, it notes the syntax for specific PDF/UA elements,
but not the tags or tag tree structure.

So it does provide some help for "technically-included authors" and you may
find helpful parts of it, but it does not give the details of how to produce
accessible PDFs for content authors.

Thanks, Bevi, I'll try to keep those caveats in mind as I start to use it.

I guess I'm just desperate for any kind of guidance and clarity on some
of the more complex PDF tagging issues, so I'm excited to have
*anything* that resembles clear recommendations from a recognized group
or professional association. Regardless of whether it's intended more
for software developers than remediators, I'll take it!

Currently, it feels very much like the wild west out here in tagged PDF
remediation land. I find I learn about best practices as often or even
more often by examining the completed work of other professional
remediators or by reviewing code produced by my PDF remediation software
as I learn about it by reading any publicly available guidelines or best
practice lists. One of the only places I can find reliable answers to
some tagging questions is here on this WebAIM list. And even then, it's
not always clear that there is a consensus among the professionals
contributing here.

We always get feedback from A T users before making some of those decisions.

You're right, accessibility is sometimes a loose-goosey standard and there
are many interpretations of PDF/UA-1 as well as ways to meet the standards.

When in doubt, test with various A T and err on the side of the people who
use assistive technologies.
