Subject: Issues with remediating PDF documents

Hello everyone, we have a document that is showing various issues with
tagging ("other elements", forms and tagged annotations errors when using
tables) we've followed instructions to remediate those issues but it is
not working. What do you do when you run into those issues. We have tried
all the fixes suggested online and nothing works. We need to have the
documents available as soon as possible.

Also were you trying to fix it because of the Acrobat checker or using
another checker for PDF/UA?

We are using Acrobat to fix the issues.
Here they are:
1) "Other elements alternate text - fails" It highlights the items in the
table of contents.
2) "Tagged form fields-failed"- However, we added the tags and still have
the same errors.
3) "Other elements alternate text-Failed"- It highlight some of the images
included in the document. But those images have alt text.

The Acrobat errors you list can arise for various reasons, and there is
not always one method to fix each specific error. I would start with the
form field and "annotation" issues. Sometimes fixing those might make
other errors disappear.
2) "Tagged form fields-failed"
Here I would guess that you have added Form tags, but you haven't marked
the "annotations" as Form fields. Acrobat doesn't automatically mark
form fields correctly when you simply use the "Form" button the "Touch
Up Reading Order" tool. Form fields that are not recognized
automatically often require additional manual tweaking. Maybe you can
try to follow the instructions provided by WebAIM to tag these unmarked
annotations?:

Mmmm....those instructions are a bit more garbled that I assumed, when I
sent the link! What I mean is just the "unmarked annotations" part. Use
the Find feature in the Tags tree to see if there are any unmarked
annotations. If there are any, then use that feature to mark them as
Form items. If there are no "unmarked annotations", then that's not the
problem and my guess is wrong, so you can ignore the rest.

I tried that approach twice and it did not work.

Drat!
Can I check then, when you run the "Full Check" in Acrobat, and you go
to that error in the Accessibility Checker panel, do you see a list of
fields when you expand the arrow by the "Tagged form fields - failed"
error? Or do you get no fields showing there, even though the error
won't go away?
And when you try to use the "Find" for "Unmarked annotations" you end up
finding nothing - no results at all?
These things can be very tricky to figure out!

Hi Itzel,
I recently had these sorts of problems, I found it useful to try to locate
the items in the Content panel, rather than the Tags panel in Acrobat, and
see if you can see if an existing image with an alt text was accidentally
split in two when exporting the doc, it sometimes results in one image with
alt text and one image without (or, in my case, a 1px wide sliver of an
image on the next page) and if it's a false image, you can delete the
element from the page in the Content panel, see if that helps your doc pass.
Was this doc created in inDesign? I know when creating links in a TOC,
there is a part of the link options (where you tell it to go to a page
instead of an external web link) where you set the alt text manually to
match the highlighted text that makes the link, which may seem redundant to
set alt text on text but may fix your problem, plus it helps screen readers
parse the text correctly instead of it just reading as "blank".
