updatepanel postback and focus

for

What is the proper procedure to insure accessibility upon postbacks which
occur within asp.net ajax updatepanels? There seems to be strange results
using a screenreader. The jaws cursor seems to remain in the same place as
before the postback, whereas the focus does change. In general, I don't want
to force the developers to start setting focus on every single button press,
on the other hand there does seem to be a lack of indication that there is a
postback going on. In a regular postback the screen reader indicates this by
updating the user as to what percent of the page has loaded and by starting
to read the page from the beginning. This hasn't occurred in my updatepanel
testing. Do we really have to set focus on every submit in an updatepanel?
Any feedback from those who work with updatepanels is welcome.
