aria alert for ajax waiting div

During an async postback we have the classic ajax gif waiting div pop up on
the screen to notify users to wait until the new content loads. That div is
hidden until the postback occurs, but its content never changes (consists
of the standard obnoxious revolving wheel). Can i use a role of alert on
this div and expect a screen reader to announce its content when it is
displayed on the screen? Or, since its content never changes (only
hidden/displayed) it will not be announced?
