I respectfully disagree. The skill level of the screen reader user affects
whether the table is understandable. I've listened to many tables with
colspan properties and if the browser/screen reader combination support it
properly, I hear multiple headers before cell values and it makes sense.
There are certainly a lot of ways to mess that up, but basic colspans work
pretty well.
Now, the example given was a bit weird in that colspans spanned across
different types of cells. That would be confusing for all users.
