accessible tournament bracket pages

Hi all,
I have been looking at Terrill Thompson's tournament brackets. I really appreciate his work. Keeping up with the tournament is far easier thanks to his efforts.
I cannot see the pages, but I am fairly sure they do not try to recreate the classic look of the four regions branching to the center box. That would be quite an undertaking, but I am betting that people much smarter than me have given this some thought.
I have searched the archive and found no discussion of brackets, but perhaps I used the wrong keywords. Does anyone have some rules-of-thumb about the navigation patterns to support if a design were to mimic the classic look?
