Tim and Lori,
I too am in a new position and very frustrated with trying to figure out what I should learn, and what I should learn first. In fact, I have been a lurker on this list for several months because I feel like I don't even know enough to ask an intelligent question. For instance, I have just been tasked with deciphering DOJ's SANPRM. There are 123 questions to consider for public comments! I'm feeling overwhelmed.

Thanks for your helpful posts, Tim.

The IAAP certification is actually separate from the Deque courses.

If you want to learn about the IAAP certification, you will want to look at:
http://www.accessibilityassociation.org/ <http://www.accessibilityassociation.org/>;

The Deque courses are one way you might prepare for the certification. However, you can also just choose to sign-up for the Deque courses you find useful.

Actually, if you or others who are new to accessibility are interested, I would be willing to mentor a few people. I know this field is quite rewarding, but it can also seem overwhelming to people new to accessibility. However, our field is in desperate need of more experts and I definitely wish to do my part in helping new people develop their skills and knowledge.

Thanks,
Tim

Hi Carolyn,
I came across this article which does a great job of highlighting the key issues in the DOJ's recent supplemental request for public comment. Instead of trying to stay awake while reviewing all 123 questions in the formal document <grin>, you can get right to the good stuff with this 5-10 minute read: http://www.adatitleiii.com/2016/05/attention-public-accommodations-dojs-recent-rulemaking-action-for-state-and-local-government-websites-reveals-its-current-thinking-on-web-accessibility/.

Hi Carolyn,

As a Senior SME at Deque, I will of course echo the suggestion to
investigate our DequeU content as a great starting point, especially if you
are preparing for the IAAP exam.

As an active participant at the W3C, I'll also point out that the W3C WCAG
requirements, and understanding those requirements will be hugely
beneficial, as the WCAG standard is either the actual mandated requirement
within commercial and/or non-US-based organizations (i.e. Canada, the UK,
the EU, etc.), or will be heavily if not directly referenced in the Section
508 refresh activity underway. A great starting point at the W3C is here:
https://www.w3.org/WAI/gettingstarted/tips/. A deeper dive can also be
started here: https://www.w3.org/WAI/gettingstarted/Overview.html

Finally, given that you are working in higher-ed, you may also want to
investigate the Educause IT Accessibility Constituent Group at:
http://www.educause.edu/discuss/constituent-groups-about-information-systems-and-services/it-accessibility-constituent-group
for peer support and collaboration.

Thanks for all your tips, John. I really appreciate it. I am starting to have more intelligent questions recently because of this list, and also have seen some answers that are most helpful!
