Hmm, I got a funny message about a 404 error. Is that what you were
asking about? If so, its pretty funny. If not, I don't know why I got
the error haha.

No. What I get when I go to that link is a page where you can download a
product from IBM called "Easy Web Browsing Software" which Macy's claims
improves accessibility on their site.

If you go to http://www.macys.com/ and then go to the link "Download our new
user assistance tool" which sounds like it is near the bottom of the page,
you'll get the Macy's link and info about the Easy Web Browsing tool.

It looks like a great product for someone who could benefit from a
screen magnifier.

As long as he doesn't already have a screen magnifier.

And as long as he doesn't use any application except his browser

(so long as that browser doesn't have a zoom function).

And as long as he doesn't browse any site except for macys.com.

Oh, yes, almost forgot: He'd better be using Windows
(http://www1.macys.com/accessibility/os_err_en.html).

There are a bunch of these "solutions" out there. I think Macy's would
be better off putting the effort into making their site accessible
with alt attributes, semantic HTML, coherent document structure, etc.,
rather than trying to shift the responsibility onto somebody else.

Chris, here's the answer I got when I e-mailed their customer service about the 404 error their link generates for people who use Macs:

"We apologize that you have experiened [sic] problems attempting to access our tool for the visually disabled user. We have included some information that may assist you. I was able to go through the steps and have included the requirements of your equipment to be able to use the tool.

"Operating System: Usable with Microsoft(R) Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Vista*
* Supported for 32-bit version only

"Browser: Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.5(SP2), 6.0, or 7.0 is required. Internet Explorer 6 is strongly recommended."

I would think that a 404 message is inappropriate when the problem is that the destination of the link works with only a limited selection of browsers and operating systems. When that's the case, people should be told those limitations *before* they click the link, right?

I'm on a Mac and I was able to access the link that explains the software
(the one I posted) just fine.
