Hi, all.

I am presenting to a group of 25-30 web developers/site owners/ content
creators from across our campus about web accessibility and our
responsibilities as an institution of higher ed. This is a group with
varying levels of interest and expertise. Some already focus on
accessibility in their site development and maintenance processes and
others do not focus on it at all. What would you include?

I recently gave a five minute lightning talk about accessibility and i focused on making sure markup is correct (and gave a live demo with voiceOver on how people can navigate the page by looking at a list of links or headings) and also that everything is keyboard operable & why that affects more than just visually impaired users.

I chose those because I thought those might be two things that are easy to communicate in a short time but might have a big impact.

I think screenreader demos are handy for those that have never experienced that before. And screen readers can be funny sometimes. (I like how voiceOver’s voice sounds like i’m poking it with a needle when I type in caps)

Since this question about what to include in trainings comes up
fairly often, perhaps these links may help many:

If you'd like, you are welcome to check out my CSUN presentation outline for
ideas, downloadable at
http://whatsock.com/csun/2014

It includes three sections that may be of help, Keyboard Accessibility,
Screen Reader Accessibility, and Cognitive Accessibility, as well as some
coding examples to demonstrate the key concepts involved for accessible
interactive web development.
