Subject: Skip links to peekaboo content

Happy decorative gourd season everyone!
On the University of Aberdeen website we have skip links. They skip to the main content, and they skip to the section navigation.
At smaller screen widths, the section navigation is hidden behind a reasonably accessible toggle mechanism, at which point the "skip to navigation" link points to something no longer on the page.
This is somewhat less than optimal.
We could remove the "skip to navigation" link altogether; the rationale for having it was to provide another quick (landmark-independent) way to get to the navigation from anywhere on the page, with few keyboard interactions, but not having it isn't a dealbreaker.
At the other end of the spectrum we could use some funky JavaScript to detect the relevant viewport width and convert the skip link to a combination "skip to navigation and activate the toggle" link at the respective breakpoints. Naturally this would involve all the joys that coding such things can bring.
However I'm wondering if this is something folks have encountered, and if so, whether there may be alternative approaches.
Thanks in advance,
Allan
