adjacent link confusion

When putting images together for menu selections, does anyone know how
to separate the adjacent <A>anchor images</A> tags with anything other
than [] and 'I' to get them to be level AAA compliant?... Heavily
tapping the monitor doesn't seem to be helping...:-]
