It's much worse than that! JAWS uses the rendered table size, so
simply increasing your font size or zooming the page can result in
data tables being interpreted as layout tables, thus they'd lose all
accessibility functionality.
Take a data table that has a sentence of text and JAWS identifies it
as a data table. Bump up the font or zoom the page a bit and it
suddenly is a layout table even if headers are in place.
Now let's all think of an audience that is quite likely to have
increased fonts or be zooming a page. Hmmm... JAWS users maybe?
