QuickTime X doesn't (yet) handle much of what QuickTime 7 did.
Fortunately, you can install QuickTime 7 alongside QuickTime X in Snow
Leopard:

(For a thorough, technical explanation of the situation, see the
QuickTime X section of John Siracusa's amazing Snow Leopard review at
Ars Technica:

Subject: [WebAIM] Can't open .smil files with Quicktime 10

Hi,

I'm using quicktime Version 10.0 (90.3.1) at Snow Leopard. In the past
versions I all the time opened .smil files, more precisely the one
that now don't run. This occur after made the update. I get this error:
'The document "marie.smil" could not be opened. QuickTime Player
cannot open files in the "synchronized multimedia integration
language" format'

Any idea?

Thanks and happy 2010!
