Subject: Accessibility Sprint Planning

Hi,

We are planning a three day sprint (5/20-22 in the SF Bay Area) to discuss, envision and prototype end-to-end tools for creating, discovering and reading accessible rich and interactive eBooks (e.g. may include video and interactive widgets). Our goal is to make accessible authoring easy and enjoyable so that it becomes the default for authors. We plan to bring together developers from organizations in the accessibility, education and publishing realms, interested independent developers and use case experts.

On day one, participating projects and individuals will do brief demos of their existing tools and processes. Then we will break into small groups and brainstorm ways to enhance and integrate tools to make born accessible ebooks a reality. On days two and three, designers and developers will flesh out the most promising ideas, create working prototypes, and present the results. Finally we will discuss opportunities for further collaboration and proposals.

Three groups are organizing this sprint: Benetech, the Inclusive Design Research Centre, (both with expertise in accessible content and software), and the Shuttleworth Foundation funded OERPUB project (bringing an open-source authoring tool developed for creating open textbooks and other structured content). You can read about and comment on the sprint in our planning document.

In order to help us plan, we would like to gather your input from the survey link below:
