jquery ui .autocomplete() extra <span with class ''ui-helper-hidden-accessible"

Jquery UI seems to add a <span with class
''ui-helper-hidden-accessible" at the very end of the page.. I see
it because I do not use the themeroller css. I add it in when I need
it.
Question. Is this extra span really needed for accessibility?
I listened to the instance with NVDA that I set up on my local and
could interact, pull a choice select it, then return and have it NVDA
read it.
