W3C planning for Accessible Date Pickers

Since this too comes up often on this list, with variable responses and sometimes contradictory advice, we are currently working out the ARIA Authoring Practices Guide 1.1 design pattern for date pickers, the expected behaviors of which are currently being discussed at
https://github.com/w3c/aria-practices/issues/34

For those who are interested in this, or wish to add feedback or recommendations, please do so. This will impact future recommendations about these widget types in the future.
