In a way I'm just repeating other posters, but another way of stating the
function of aria-live and role=alert is that they listen for content
changes in the element to which they are applied. So if you have an empty
container with role=alert, then inject text into that container, a screen
reader will announce that text. However, if you inject an element that both
contains a text node, and has the role of alert, nothing will announce.
