Thanks Birkir. I was thinking it was being treated like a mini application
role.

Neither the C shortcut nor the down arrow can find the combos, at least
with NVDA on Firefox or Chrome.

And I agree with Steve too that the patterns are very complex, but my
example was very simple. No autocomplete or anything. Just that little
snippet that I include in the OP.
