Brian,

This paragraph does not directly address your question, but it is always best to leave the default settings when testing. I made that mistake a long time ago only to realize that different screen readers use their screen readers with different settings. By keeping the default settings intact, you would know that right out of the box this particular screen reader is going to behave this way.

On my own personal Voiceover settings, I usually turn helpful hints off. I just checked www.google.com and Voiceover did not make that announcement in the search text field. It stated: "Text field. Is editing. Insertion point at start." On the wellsfargo.com log-in site, it stated: "Secure text field".

It depends on what type of iOS you are using and even device. I have iOS 18.3.2 running on iPhone 16E.

When I setup this new phone, I set it up as a new device. I realized that after having multiple devices in the past, Voiceover settings got so altered that it was reading certain things in a weird manner. I also had issues with other app settings. So I decided to disregard my old iOS settings in the iCloud and start fresh. That surely fixed many problems I was having that I got used to hearing. That is why I started by telling you to keep the default settings with any iOS or screen reader that you use to test web pages.

I hope this helps.
