Hey Bryan
First all NVDA is free :-)
The next thing as I am not sure if you are aware of this having hearing issues.
However, NVDA has browse mode and focus mode.
If you want to browse the computer, your computer will be on browse mode.
If you need to edit in a field press caps lock or insert spacebar to enter into focus mode and then you can type.
If you are unable to browse the web, you may be in focus mode so press either caps lock or insert plus the spacebar again and then you’ll be able to enter back into browse mode
I hope this information helps. Good luck.

I'm a deaf person who reviews/edits flyers for my agency, and I use the free version of NVDA (with my phone voice-to-text) to review the accessibility under "real world conditions" rather than trusting that everything will happen smoothly. I had the updated NVDA running in background when I tried to edit the pdf to correct something. Multiple times, I couldn't actually type any text until I turned off the NVDA in the background.
