i am the director of a nonprofit arts and education organization in rhode
island that provides programs and resources for people with disabilities.
we have gotten several calls lately from professional acquaintances at
other educational and human service organizations that are looking for
information for where they can go locally to get a professional,
accessible/wai/bobby approved web site built.
i am looking to put together a referral list of professional designers and
agencies in or near rhode island that are up to speed on access - people
and places that really understand universal design and have had the
technical training and experience to build web sites properly, not just
where info, training or consultants about the standards exist.
while i understand there is no specific "credentialing" in place, just
calling around to "web site designers/ad agencies" and asking what people
know (trying to uncover?) is not working.
well intentioned people have gotten burnt by designers who say they
understand, claim to have the expertise, but then it doesn't turn out that
way & additional time (and $$) gets wasted identifying all that's wrong
after the fact, and trying to fix it......... yikes!
while it's to be expected that there may always be some small problem areas
to work on to improve any designed site, i'd really like to be able to help
answer people about web designers that understand and incorporate the core
issues of access in their work.
i've been to the Guild of Accessible Web Designers site but did not turn up
anybody in or near rhode island. there must be a narrower field of smart
web site builders that you all have knowledge of - HELP! & thanks,
VSA arts of Rhode Island
