Hi, everyone,
I'm trying to caption a .mov video with MAGpie 2.
. Every time I create a new project, select the source file, and hit
the OK button, the editor window and media player flashes quickly, then the
whole application crashes and closes.
. QuickTime works fine stand-alone, i.e., I can play the very same
source file on the QT player with no problem.
. Nevertheless, I reinstalled both QT and MAGpie, with the same
results.
. I have a similar crash problem with .wmv files, so it's not
exclusive to .mov files.
Does anyone have any idea what's going on or what else I might try?

The Java and GRINS player set up in MAGpie 2 is fairly complicated to
get set up correctly. There haven't been updates for a while, so it
might not be compatible with new versions of Java.
I'd recommend exporting a .wav or .mp3 with just the audio and then
use it in MAGpie to produce the captions. Unless there is something
you need to see in the video, this takes up less screen space and
MAGpie will be much more responsive when the video isn't loaded.
Or you could just use MAGpie 1, though you'd be limited to files that
can be opened in Windows Media Player.
There is a MAGpie mailing list -

Hey, Jared,
Just an FYI: I tried an .mp3 file, and it still crashed.
If it is the version of JAVA I'm using, I guess that's what I get for
following directions to get the latest version...
I have sent a query to the MAGpie listserv, thanks for the tip!

A colleague of mine also had crash problems, so she first tried
MAGpie 1 as an alternative and then discoverd URUWorks Subtitle
Workshop <http://www.urusoft.net/home.php?lang=1>, which appears to
have more features.
Best regards,
Christophe

There is something I forgot to mention about Subtitle Workshop: when
my colleague exported captions as SAMI, Windows Media Player didn't
render them. We found that the attribute values in the SAMI file had
single quotes and replaced them with double quotes; after that,
Windows Media Player was able to process the SAMI file and render the
captions. (We use Windows Media Player 11 on Windows XP.)
