Subject: online tutorials - free or reasonably priced

I have a request from someone at our department of health and
environmental control. Can anyone suggest resources for her? I've
done a quick search and didn't see anything that was free or as
"cheap" as I know they need.

"We are busy here at DHEC continuing to improve our Web site. As part
of the agency's 508 Compliance Plan, we are trying to address staff
training. We'd love to know if there are any straightforward on-line
trainings for web designers and content writers help them improving
accessibility, such as "Writing for the Web," "508 101", etc. We
ultimately hope to develop our own trainings, but in the interim
wanted to provide assistance our staff who develop content, many of
whom have very varied backgrounds and skills. Any assistance that you
can provide will be appreciated."

Janet, does your friend know about Webcontent.gov ( http://www.usa.gov/webcontent/ )? There is a wealth of information there on the topics your friend is concerned with.

I assume that the DHEC is a state or local governmental agency here in the U.S. As such, their Web content managers are welcome to join the federal Web Managers Forum ( https://forum.webcontent.gov/general/login.asp ). Through the forum they can find many free resources online and frequently offer free webinars on using plain language, producing accessible content, testing sites for usability, and other helpful topics.

Also, if a book or two is within their budget, I highly recommend Letting Go of the Words: Writing Web Content that Works ( http://www.amazon.com/Letting-Go-Words-Interactive-Technologies/dp/0123694868/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&;amp;s=books&qid=1276528042&sr=1-1 ) by Ginny Redish and Forms that Work: Designing Web Forms for Usability ( http://www.amazon.com/Forms-that-Work-Interactive-Technologies/dp/1558607102/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&;amp;s=books&qid=1276528492&sr=1-1 ) by Caroline Jarrett, Gerry Gaffney, and Steve Krug. Both are easy to read, easy to follow, and top-notch sources of information in their respective areas.

It is not WCAG2 based but would be a good start for 508.
