Subject: Feedback request for jQuery UI autocomplete accessibiliting

Good afternoon,

I'm looking for feedback on accessibility improvements to the jQuery UI autocomplete widget. In particular there are two demos that need review. Below are the links to the demos and known bugs.

1. Default
http://view.jqueryui.com/autocomplete-aria/demos/autocomplete/default.html

Pressing the down arrow to select from the list of suggestions reads the name of each selection twice.

2. Multiple
http://view.jqueryui.com/autocomplete-aria/demos/autocomplete/multiple.html

After the autocomplete popup message pressing the down arrow once seems to go to the second element in the popup list. Also, pressing enter on an element doesn't always select it.

The first example works great on OS X/VoiceOver and the second example works fine too but has an annoying announcement each time you arrow down saying "Bottom of document".

They both work well on iOS/VoiceOver the only strange thing is each time you activate a selection VO reads the formatting info saying "Verdana, 11point".

when using NVDA 2011.3 with fire fox 10, the first example the
suggestions are announcing twice when arrowing, the second example
working fine .

Both the examples read like
"tags colon edit actionscript actionscript" for each down arrow
Software used: Jaws13 and ie8

Example 1 works perfectly with IE9 and Jaws 13.7. I am having issues
with the second example, but I need to confirm it on a different
computer, since my Jaws installation seems to be having issues with
refreshing off-screen buffer in IE. Post back with results tomorrow.

Everett,

I tried this with ZoomText 9.1 and JAWS 12 with IE8 for both.

ZT: The textbox is not announced as anything special, just the label.

JAWS12: Text box is announced as autocomplete. Pressing down takes me
out of Forms Mode, I thought it would stay in the options. I had to
shift+tab to get it back, then could use the arrows to view/navigate
the autocomplete options. I could never get it to read the top option
in the second link.
