On behalf of a group here at Iowa: Anyone have any good experience with online calendar accessibility? The group in question wants to implement a pretty sophisticated calendar of events and is concerned about accessibility. One developer questions whether a calendar should be considered tabular data at all.
My thought is that the visual layout can *appear* tabular, for visual convenience, but that another semantic model for events (sorted by date, venue, etc) could be more useful. Ideas?

Yes.
I second the above.
Tabulation enhances the information for visual users.
But it is not necessary for users with visual disability.
If the calendar displays information by such key words:
Event, by date, by month / year, or by week.
