I am writing an article on making Intranets accessible: why it is important
and how to do it? Of course, the benefits to business for making Internet
sites accessible would differ from benefits related to accessible Intranets.
Does anyone know of any resources that present compelling rationale? For
example, how do you convince an employer to spend the money for retrofitting
that will benefit only a limited number of employees? Uttering the word
'lawsuit' does not count.
And, what is the most effective way to implement a plan? A top-down
approach? To have one person [or department] 'champion' the initiative?
Any input here would be appreciated.

Efficiency is more effective a word than lawsuit, but the truth is that
part of
being an equal-opportunity employer is making sure that your
infrastructure
does not prevent you from employing people with disabilities.
Some of the good reasons are:
1. Accessible sites are usually more efficient and usable, and an
intranet site wastes your company's time and yours alone whenever
there are inefficient usability problems.
2. Accessible sites are far more standards-based and thus are not
tied to proprietary systems. This allows, for example, your company
to switch to new desktop machines or browsers without having
to redo your entire intranet system. Accessible sites thus save
money in the long term. They also allow you to incorporate other
technologies into your site in an easier manner.
3. Many of your employees will be temporarily disabled from time
time. An accessible site is easier to use if you have sprained your
wrist or broken your arm.
