Related to Alastair's Chrome extension announcement, the HTML5 longdesc has been published as a Proposed Recommendation at the W3C - see email below for more details.

Thank goodness the W3C is considering bringing back the longdesc attribute.
Often, the majority of graphics in STM-G materials (science, technical,
medical and government) can't be adequately described with Alt-text.
Is there any word on the street about something similar for PDFs?
