I don't know why you *wouldn't* use THs. If the cells are in fact headers,
as suggested by the use of id and header attributes, why not use THs. All it
requires is a change of one character. If it is the style of the THs that
bother you, centered and bold, use a style rule to change it.

...especially for backwards compatibility. Not all screen readers will
support Header Id associations, all will understand <th>...
