Hello WebAIM discussion-

Has anyone run into the situation when entering a form field causes JAWS to
stop working- in other words crash or create a freeze? I have someone
claiming this behavior but have never encountered it.

Thanks

Jon

Hi Jon, its impossible to answer this question without having example code
to reproduce the issue.

I have experienced times when JAWS and Word stopped responding. Generally in the Jaws 16 days, I could bring up NVDA or Narrator and get around the issue. With newer JAWS when a freeze like this happens, often JAWS will automatically restart itself, though usually when JAWS is back Word or the other program that was causing the issue has now turned into a "not responding" application and everything is then lost.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

I have experienced Jaws slowly going unresponsive in large text input
fields (such as the email field in GMail) or a Facebook message with
IE11.
Jaws starts being increasingly slow and can even crash, but I can't
figure out exactly how or why, though it seems related to selecting
text, e.g. when editing.
Since I have not been able to reliably reproduce this I have not filed
an issue, but I have experienced this on dozens of occasions
throughout the years, including recently.

Hi,

Like Birkir I've been experiencing this for years. Though it's rare to
completely crash, but for someone who can't see the screen, there's little
discernable difference between a crash and absolute silence while you're
typing and with no audible announcement when trying to switch to another
window or application, (task switching).

I first noticed this in Wiki markdown editing forms but it's becoming more
common, especially in single page applications used for forms. Knowing the
high processing and memory usage of most screenreaders, I have as high a
spec laptop as possible. But the trends to use large file size images and
huge numbers of JavaScript files and / or single page applications still
means that there can be up to 30 seconds between typing a letter and hearing
the screenreader echo it.

So if client-side script is running, has it been optimised? Are there 1MB+
images on the same page? Is it part of a single page application? Have you
checked the page weight?

HTH,

Bim
