Is anyone using or supporting staff who use the Qualtrics Survey Platform https://www.qualtrics.com/? The staff in NCI's analytics and research branch, which conducts surveys of https://www.cancer.gov/ users, would like and welcome any suggestions and comments on best practices – what to ensure, what to avoid – from an accessibility and disability inclusion angle.
They haven't gotten any negative comments or input regarding accessibility but would like to ensure that they're ahead of the game!

Well it is possible to create accessible surveys using the platform The
biggest problem is is the creation of the surveys is not at all accessible
it's purely a drag and drop interface and horrid at best it is not the
default setting for accessibility on any of the questions you have to make
sure the labels are applied appropriately I can't tell you how often I've
seen a qualtric survey with just a row of radio buttons and no association
with the label whatsoever and the next and previous buttons being
completely unlabeled I will get the instructions that our team uses for the
creation for you but for now know that creating them is not an accessible
platform whatsoever

Hi, Lucy,
So, my suspicion or understanding is correct – it's fairly easy for a person who is NOT using assistive technology to create an accessible survey (out of the box or with accessibility in mind), but a person who does use AT is not going to be able (easily or at all) to create a survey.
Any instructions would be appreciated!

Gary M.

Correct!
I have worked with them quite a bit recently so I can dig up my notes
on creating accessible surveys, as unusable as the platform is for a
user with a disability, at lesat it is possible to create accessible
survey questions with it.

hi:
i would not say its easy its posible but not easy you need to take a lot
of care and change the defaults berker i will default to your notes as
ours may be some what out of date. frankly i think the platform needs a
big wack for making it impossible or a servay to be created by and for pwd
and i wish it would not get as much market share as it does lucy

If you could paste those notes here, or a URL to them, I'd appreciate it. We use Qualtrics a lot here and I find them difficult because wrist issues make mouse use a minor pain for me.

One thing I often see, with Qualtrics surveys is a text/graphical link at the top. Since I don't create surveys, I don't know anything about its backend, but inaccessibility in this aspect of software is all to common. As a screen reader user, I have found that if there is a text/graphics choice, I must use text, as the other generally is completely inaccessible.

I've just been trying to complete a couple surveys, albeit in preview mode, testing them using Dragon NaturallySpeaking. I've yet to be able to complete a radio button. I'm not sure if it's because of the preview mode versus having access to a published survey, if it's Dragon NaturallySpeaking's aversion to radio buttons in the last couple of DNS versions, or what. I've even tried it with Chrome, Internet Explorer, and Edge. Some of the overall Dragon command work, but nothing specific to the survey - not even the Restart Survey or Place Bookmark buttons.

Hello

I just did some testing on our Qualtrics survey and found a number of issues with it including:

Buttons with no labels for screen readers
No visible focus on buttons
Radio buttons which don't show the selected option when the user changes colours in the browser
Issues accessing content when you zoom to 200%
Text won't resize using browser options

If anyone has any guidance for setting up surveys to avoid these issues, it would be much appreciated.
