want to create something really interesting and practical you could look at how
different screen readers support JavaScript and CSS and create a suite of test
cases. There has been some discussion of how little even the experts seem to
know about this so you could break some new ground and create a really useful
resource. If you managed to build a small web application that uses some
JavaScript for form validation (along with server side checks), uses JS and CSS
to show / hide content, and perform some other basic functions I think that
would qualify as a good project.

A problem I have come across recently might be a good FYP
for you. We use PHP to develop web applications, and use
a public PHP library to create forms.
cf. http://pear.php.net/package/HTML_QuickForm

Unfortunately, the module uses HTML tables for layout, and
doesn't really make much effort at accessibility.
It would be nice if it could use fieldset/legend to group
related fields, for example.

Perhaps you could take a look at the module, and develop
an equivalent, but more accessible version, that also
generated valid XHTML 1.0 Strict code.

There are also lots of other PHP modules at pear.php.net
which probably have the same problems, so you could choose
another one instead or as well if you preferred, e.g. HTML_Table.
