Last spring, I was frustrated with the situation that most web authors
know next to nothing about web accessibility and are faced with complex,
poorly accessible explanations of how to get started with _some_
accessibily issues. I got the idea of writing a book along such lines but
the idea was rejected by three publishers, basically (I think) because
there's simply not much demand for any books on accessibility.

So I decided to convert the initial chapter of the book to a tutorial on
the web:
"Getting Started with Practical Web Accessibility"
http://www.cs.tut.fi/~jkorpela/acc/

It's not very web-like since it was originally meant to be part of a book,
but it's probably still more accessible than most guides on accessibility.
And I'm afraid I won't be able to work much on it, but I'll try to fix any
easily fixable errors.

Hi - sorry to cross post, but I thought this might be a nice way to
encourage folk to give us both feedback:
http://81.149.150.32:8080/loband/filter/fi/tut/cs/www/%20/~jkorpela/acc/

I'll be reading it now, and let you know what I think.

In principle I'm very much with you. The irony is pronounced, is it not, in
the fact that accessibility has become so inaccessible to those wishing to
learn a little to help a lot.

While I agree with the concensus in here, that standards are a way forward,
they've become so converluted that I don't know a programmer outside 'the
field' who pays the blindest (no pun intended) bit of attention to them.
Sad, but a practical reality. And then we go a say things like "just because
it's standards compliant doesn't mean its accessible" (which is true). Its a
wonder anyone tries at all.

Anway - must be blue Moday getting to me...

Here's to practical tips and solutions!

Phil

It looks like a very practical guide that will be useful as my own
reference and also to point others to.

And knowing Jukka's approach I guess its fair to say it will be a
no-nonsense read.

Thanks also for the link to the Yellowpipe online Lynx viewer.

Good work

Josh

Jukka,

If you weren't able to get it published by "real world" print publishers,
have you thought of making it into an e-book and selling it online?

Or, if you want it in print, take a look at www.lulu.com
