Has anyone successfully added a language to Adobe InDesign? If so, how did you do it?

We are getting a lot of English / Welsh dual language PDFs to fix, and while we can easily set the languages in Acrobat, I would like to teach our clients to set the appropriate languages in the paragraph styles in InDesign.

This is easy to do with the built-in languages, but Welsh is not one of them. I have found an Adobe article that says you have to obtain a dictionary in the required language in a .udc file format. However, I cannot find any such dictionaries.

I have found a Welsh dictionary that has files with .aff and .dic file formats, but InDesign does not recognise them. Articles that refer to these file formats are mostly more than ten years old, so I suspect the dictionary technology has changed since then.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Lisa. Unfortunately, that article mostly talks about adding dictionaries to existing languages. At the end it provides a link to "Add and remove Hunspell dictionaries", which I already found. This describes how you are supposed to be able to add new languages. However, this page says to place the files in locations that don't exist on my machine, and all my experiments have failed.

I'm not sure about adding multiple languages but you can install default
languages from Creative Cloud CC Account go to preferences then Apps. Hope
this gives you a temp fix.

Thanks Zainab, but that sets the display language of the application, not the language of the document. And in any case the list of languages doesn't include Welsh.

If you have specific questions about any Adobe product, visit Adobe's online forums. https://community.adobe.com/

I'm an Adobe Community Professional there (an invited expert and Forum moderator). Best to first search the forums for your topic; there's a good chance we've already answered your question. If nothing meets your needs, then post a question in the appropriate forum: Acrobat, InDesign, etc.

RE: your dictionary/language situation. You're right, Welsh is not included in InDesign's standard set of language dictionaries that are installed with the program.

There are 2-steps to designating a language in InDesign:

1. Select (or install and then select) the appropriate language dictionary in Preferences / Language.
2. Select the appropriate language in your style definitions.

This lets you set the language globally for the primary language, and designate another language for specific paragraphs of text or individual phrases. Examples: A primarily English language brochure with a Spanish translation. Also a foreign phrase within a sentence, such as "bon voyage" specified in French.

In your case, I'd ask the Forum if the Welsh dictionary is available for InDesign. Copy/Paste what you originally wrote in your post here at WebAIM. I don't have an answer where to get a Welsh dictionary, but another moderator/ACP probably does and can direct you. Someone there definitely knows more about InDesign dictionaries than I do!

I'm amazed by the wealth of information the moderators/ACPs have in Adobe's forums. It's not perfect, but it's the first place I'd go for technical answers.

Thanks Zainab, but that sets the display language of the application, not the language of the document. And in any case the list of languages doesn't include Welsh.

I'm not sure about adding multiple languages but you can install default languages from Creative Cloud CC Account go to preferences then Apps. Hope this gives you a temp fix.

Ah I see the difference, that is too bad...I know someone who added to a
dictionary with a different language, but obviously that isn't the best!

Post when you find a solution, as that is weird! I know with CC, things are
more in the CC 'system' than on the computer now (that is just my
observation, it may not be that technically)...

Hi Bevi, thanks for the suggestion - I have just posted on the forum.

Steve,

I think you need help from someone at Adobe. I could provide a suggestion if you send me a message.
