Dear WebAim community,
I've been trying to find accessibility information, if there is any, about having links within image captions. I wanted to be sure if having links within image captions is okay to do with regards to accessibility. If you can provide any information or links to info, that would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks so much!

Hi Jo,
So would this be an image showing on the page, and then a link to the image
caption right under it (instead of the actual caption)? Would the image
caption be short or very long?
Cheers

Hi Lisa and thank you so much for the very quick reply!
The image would live on a news website. I believe the caption wouldn't be very long. The caption would appear under an image. The text of the caption would include text that would be linked to either an internal or external website/page.

Gotcha! That sounds fine to do in my view. Just watch the colour contrast
of the link with the surrounding text, and make sure it has focus for
keyboard navigation that is at least 2 px wide in a colour that also is
good contrast. Oh and I still recommend underlining if possible, it makes
the link stands out for people with low vision...although with the new
generations I wonder if we will still do that-as they grew up with the web
and are used to non underlined links (still underline is good for people
with low vision especially).

Many thanks!!
I will take this info back to who I report to.
And, agreed, the "new generation" will be much more web savvy moving forward so it'll be interesting to see what stays and what goes in the future!
Have a great day!

I'll add, for extra points, use figure/figcaption as well.

I would avoid figure & figcaption for image plus caption alone.
Screen Readers might announce while navigating with arrow down:
1. [Content of figcaption] begin
2. [Content of figcaption]
3. [value of alt-attribute]
4. [Content of caption]
5. [Content of figcaption] end
Very annoying to get rather the same info in 5 instances.
