Hello,

Has anyone researched on accessible maps? I have been looking for Google
and Bing maps VPAT document - so as to validate its accessibility.

I found info on Bing Maps through the site
http://www.va.gov/trm/ToolPage.asp?tid=5105# stating "Bing Maps is not
508 compliant. However, an alternative can be presented. For example,
offering a map view but also a "list view" that does not use JavaScript
and is screen reader friendly." Since Microsoft Silverlight is not an
approved technology, the Bing Maps Silverlight Component is prohibited.

I have tried accessing both the maps through screen reader but in vain.
Any idea if there exists an accessible map compliant with 508 and WCAG?

Hi

What do you mean by the maps being accessible exactly?
I have used Google Maps successfully with Jaws and NVDA. By "using
them" I mean I get map driving or walking directions from the web
site.
The maps themselves will obviously be tactile graphics, which presents
a whole other issue of presentation and hardware, and the closest
mainstream developrs can come to having accessible tactile graphics is
to offer the map in .SVG format, even then there's still ways to go
until we can fully and easily translate that into accessible graphics,
unless you have Viewplus Iveo or similar.
I know this isn't much, but hope this helps.
Feel free to clarify the question a bit more and I'll try to give a
more precise answer.
