Hi,

Does anyone know whether JAWS 14 has fixed the bug of aria-describedby content being read twice? See this page for a demo of this problem: http://wps.pearsoned.com/WAI_ARIA_Testing/221/56717/14519713.cw/index.html. I don't see this as being fixed in Freedom Scientific's list of enhancements, but I don't think their list is comprehensive (http://freedomscientific.com/downloads/jaws/JAWS14-previous-enhancements.asp). I'm not able to download version 14 right now to test it myself.

As a side note, does anyone know of a way to work around or avoid triggering this bug in JAWS 13?

Thanks,
Zoe

Zoe,

I just tested with Firefox and IE. It appears to be fixed in 14. The extra
info only got read once.

Hi,

No, I am using JAWS V14 and when I went to the test page that you mentioned, I got the same problem with JAWSS 14 reading the aria-described lines twice.

I will report this as a bug, if it isn't already reported to the BETA testers bug database.

Not sure why on this test page:
i. a LABEL element is being used for aria-describedby association.
Both JAWS and NVDA have been supporting (in IE and FF) multiple
LABELS that point to same INPUT
i.e. both 'for' values points to one 'id' value.
ii. tabindex="-1" is set on descriptor of user name field.

Another irritation: For over 3 years I have experienced JAWS say "Use
JAWS key +R to read descriptive text" on any element that uses
aria-describedby with Firefox browser on XP and Windows 2007.
Anyone else see this?
I have reported it more than once to FS.

Using IE9, FF13 and JAWS 12/13:
aria-describedby value is read once only in (/ out of) forms mode on
this page or other similar instances.

Yes, I've seen the "use JawsKey plus R" in the exact scenario. This is because the current element has the describe by parameter as you note, that keystroke will get related text if it's there, however, I'd like the ability to turn that message off in quick settings.

Don,
I have never seen that key combination actually do anything with
aria-describedby. JAWS+R only helps to restrict JAWS cursor. The
describedby value is exposed without requiring any special keystroke.

Hi Sailesh:

If you are trying to disable this message, this can be done from the
speech and sounds manager.

access settings centre from your browser,
select speech and sounds manager
Specify the speech and sound scheme,
activate the edit button,
Move to the html tab and select the described by item in the list,

you can then modified the settings and text to be spoken at this point
and then save the scheme.

I have rarely needed to use this feature, but had to recently. I think
this should be added to the quick settings functionality and perhaps in
the Site specific options as well.

Don, please do report this bug! Thanks!

I did more investigation into it and found that the real trigger of the bug is not putting the description text in something other than a <label>, as that initial page I linked to suggests, but rather it is not repeating the text of the label in its entirety at the start of the description text. Strange, eh? More info and demos here:
http://zomigi.com/test/aria-describedby_jaws13-bug.html

I'd love to hear from at least one other JAWS 14 user that this bug is still indeed in place, though...

Thanks,
Zoe

I will report this as a bug, if it isn't already reported to the BETA testers bug database.

Hi,

No, I am using JAWS V14 and when I went to the test page that you mentioned, I got the same problem with JAWSS 14 reading the aria-described lines twice.

Subject: [WebAIM] aria-describedby in JAWS 14

Thanks,
Zoe
