Hello,
Can anyone recommend a free screen reader for UI development work. I'm doing my best for creating an accessible site, but it's a guess if what I'm doing is working like I think it is.

Thanks for any help,
Greg Gamble

Hi:

I believe that JAWS still offers a demo version that will run in forty minute mode. It's not exactly free but good enough if you are not running it full time.

NVDA if you're on Windows or VoiceOver if you're on a Mac or iOS. Be sure to read the help guide and keyboard commands for each.

Have fun! :)

Note that the JAWS license specifically disallows using the evaluation
version for development work.
"For example, these demonstration or evaluation licenses are not permitted
for purposes of development and testing of JAWS scripts, applications, HTML
coding, or other Web Based code."

While testing with NVDA and Fangs (a Firefox extension that writes a text simulation of a default JAWS output) is very handy, keep in mind that your experience will be completely different from that of a real user of assistive technology. I encourage you to involve real people with disabilities in your testing as much as possible. Shawn Henry wrote a book exactly about that: http://uiaccess.com/accessucd/

I second NVDA. It's a great tool for people who don't use AT all the time. nvda-project.org is the website for a free download.
