Do most visual users count the number of options and maintain a count of where they are in the list as they move through a combo box? Perhaps adding changing the options to "Alabama" (1 of 50) Alaska (2 of 50) ... would make the combo box's more useful for everyone. </sarcasm>

I always make a best practice note to recommend people order options
in comboboxes logically, usually in alphabetical order, to make it
easier to locate your desired option,. It also gives you an idea of
the number of options in the combobox.
Native <select> behavior in most browsers is also that typing the
first letter of your desired option moves focus to the first element
beginning with that letter.
