Hello everyone,
First off, thank you all so much for your helpful discussions over the
years. I've not submitted a thread before, but am eager to hear your
opinions on this issue.
I work with the Olympia School District in Washington state. Currently, the
county is creating safe walking maps for our school district, as well as
other districts in the county. Thankfully, the county is considering the
accessibility of their maps as they create them, and they've asked us for
our take on the maps. Here is an example map
<https://www.osd.wednet.edu/UserFiles/Servers/Server_61540/File/Accessibility/Maps/MtView_WalkMap_Final1.pdf>.
Note the PDF has not been tagged yet as it is a work in progress.
I know maps overall can be difficult, and often it seems interactive maps,
or maps that generate a list of directions are the route to go, but that
doesn't appear to be an option here. This map has a wealth of useful
information for our families:

- Recommended routes
- Crossing locations
- Roads with sidewalks but high traffic
- Roads without sidewalks
- Crosswalks
- Streets with sidewalks
- other trails and paths
- signalized crosswalks
- 20mph school zones
- Walk to school zones

One potential solution that came to mind was to list these elements out,
like this (using heading styles to break up the sections) and have it as
on-page content:

Mountain View Elementary
Recommended Routes to School
From the North/East

1. South on Judd Street
2. West on 19th Avenue, 20th Avenue, or 21st Avenue – all streets
without sidewalks but with low traffic.

From the West

1. East on 21st Avenue, a street with a sidewalk

maps.
Thank you all so much for your input!

Best,
Robert
