ARIA applications and document text

Good morning,

I'm wondering if there is a best practice for how to present document information within an ARIA application region? What I mean by this is if you have an ARIA application, but have a text pane within the document that has a large amount of text for the user to read, is there a way to set a role on this text that will disengage application mode for AT that supports an application role?

I'm looking for the correct, best practice, answer, and also the practical real world, it actually works, answer as well.
