WAI-ARIA 1.0 Authoring Practices includes a design pattern for an accessible Datepicker widget: http://www.w3.org/WAI/PF/aria-practices/#datepicker. This is the direction we're going at my company. The ARIA design patterns include a description of each widget, keyboard nav guidelines, role/state/property info and links to working code examples.
